Contamination OCD
Therapy for fear of germs, illness or feeling 'dirty inside' — and the washing and avoiding that never feel finished.
Does this sound familiar?
Door handles, public toilets, hospitals, certain people or places — contact leaves you feeling contaminated until you wash, clean or change your clothes, sometimes for hours. Or the contamination is mental: a feeling of being dirty or tainted that no shower reaches. Your world shrinks as the list of unsafe things grows.
The washing brings relief, and the relief is the trap — every wash teaches your brain that the danger was real.
How I treat contamination OCD
CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the NICE-recommended treatment, and contamination OCD is where ERP's evidence base began. Gradually, and always by agreement, we approach what OCD has ruled unsafe and let your brain discover it can tolerate the uncertainty — without the ritual.
You set the ladder; I never push you up it faster than you're willing to climb.
What to expect
A typical course runs 12–16 weekly sessions. Online works surprisingly well for contamination OCD — the exposures happen in the very environment where the problem lives, with me alongside you on the call.
Preguntas frecuentes
Isn't some washing just sensible hygiene? Of course — the line is whether it's driven by anxiety and doubt, repeated past the point of function, and expanding over time.
What does 'mental contamination' mean? Feeling dirty or tainted without physical contact — often after a memory, image or moral trigger. It's a recognised OCD presentation and treated the same way.
Will I be asked to touch things immediately? No. Exposure is gradual and always agreed together — the first sessions are about understanding, not touching.
Can sessions be in Spanish? Yes — I offer therapy in English and Spanish.
